East European HSR – Phase 2

East European HSR – Phase 2

The East European High Speed Railway is a project to create a new high-speed line between Paris and Strasbourg. Phase 1, which involved the commissioning of 300km of line, was completed in 2007. Phase 2, which covers the 106km section between Baudrecourt (Moselle) and Vendenheim (Bas-Rhin) is due for commissioning in Summer 2016.

Project objectives include: connecting Eastern France to Paris and other French regions; improving international access to the Strasbourg region and Luxembourg; and creating quick and easy access to Germany.

A number of innovations were developed during Phase 2 of the East European HSR project, in the following fields:

  • Construction and track equipment (use of recycled raw materials; installation of rail pads to reduce the intensity of the pressure so as to cut maintenance costs and extend the life of the ballast)
  • Railway signalling (use of the European ERTMS 2 standard to allow foreign trains equipped with this technology to use the line and enhance interoperability)

SYSTRA was responsible for 3 contracts on Phase 2 of the East European HSR project:

  • Managing civil engineering operations on Lots 35 and 40 of Section G
  • Project management of construction work on Lots 41 and 42 of Section G (44 km)
  • Railway equipment
