WMATA | Design-Build for Andrews Federal Center Bus Operations and Maintenance Facility
SYSTRA was the lead designer for the design-build of a new bus maintenance facility on 35 acres in Prince George’s County, MD. A LEED Silver certification application has been filed for the complex.
This new 335,000-square-foot complex conducts maintenance and manages operations for 175 buses. It includes fuel and wash operations, warehousing, bus engineering, and additional non-revenue vehicle maintenance.
SYSTRA also led the architecture and engineering design for the building complex, which includes a 19,450-square foot operator lounge, eight kitchen and break rooms, and five men’s and five women’s locker room facilities. A 240-foot long, 11-foot wide pedestrian bridge connects bus driver access to the main administrative complex.
SYSTRA designed the electrical and lighting system for the entire facility. The design included medium voltage services and coordination with the local utility company. The entire system was modeled in Revit and SKM load flow study. A short circuit study was completed and used to validate equipment sizes. The design also included a generator to provide redundancy and backup for potential power outages.
This project was awarded Engineer News-Record’s Mid-Atlantic 2019 Best Projects Award of Merit Airport/Transit.
