MBTA | Green Line Extension Design-Build Project

SYSTRA is a subconsultant to the GLX Constructors team for the design and construction of the MBTA Green Line Extension.

The project involves extending the Green Line 4.3 miles from its current terminus at Lechmere into Somerville and Medford. The $1.08 billion contract includes six options for platform canopies, additional elevators, public art, walkways, and storage yard enhancements.

The extension will begin at a relocated Lechmere station and have two branch lines, the College Avenue Branch and the Union Square Branch. There will be five new stations constructed as part of the project, including the relocated Lechmere Station, as well as a vehicle storage and maintenance facility.
Construction started in 2019, and is planned to open in 2021. Trains will then operate every five to six minutes in the peak periods, providing fast and efficient service to downtown Boston.

SYSTRA is providing rail operations simulation modeling and analysis for the extension. Planned and preferred operations in the existing railroad rights-of-way reduces the need to purchase local property and mitigate construction impacts.
