LIRR | Project Management Consultant Services for Mainline 3rd Track Expansion Project
The $1.6 billion Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) expansion program involves the addition of a third track along a 9.8-mile section of the Main Line corridor from Floral Park to Hicksville Station. The expansion will eliminate seven grade crossings along the route, as well as widen/replace seven bridges and install 9.8 miles of track with new signals, switches and communication improvements. In addition, 7.5 miles of retaining wall and sound wall will be installed along the right-of-way to reduce noise levels in residential areas.
The project will also upgrade six stations and add new parking facilities. The improvements will enhance ADA accessibility, pedestrian access, lighting, landscaping and other visual elements, as well as platforms and passenger waiting areas. The length of some of the station platforms will be increased
to facilitate passenger boarding from 12-car trains. The addition of new track between the Floral Park and Hicksville stations on the highly congested Main Line is expected to create better and more reliable service for more than half a million passengers a week. The Main Line currently serves over 300 trains daily during a weekday period.
